Every year, more than 72 million people visit Orlando making it one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. The city’s appeal has as much to do with its unbeatable tropical weather as it does with its notoriety as the theme park capital of the world. In fact, Orlando is home to four of the most popular theme park resorts, each containing dozens of different attractions and amenities.
Yet, there’s more to Orlando than just theme parks. This popular destination also features top-notch dining and entertainment options. Plus, it’s located near several state parks and points of historical interest.
With so much to see and do, Orlando is the perfect destination for your next RV vacation. If you’d like to see this unique American city for yourself, here are a few ideas to start with.
Choose a Centrally Located Campsite as Your Vacation Homebase
The beauty of an Orlando vacation is that you’re never more than a short drive away from your next adventure.
Fortunately, there are dozens of different campgrounds to choose from scattered throughout the city. When selecting your campsite, try to find one that’s located between all your points of interest. That way, you’ll spend less time in the car and more time enjoying your vacation.
During your trip, your rental RV serves as the hub for all your daytime activities. In the evening, after a day of afternoon fun, you can return to the comfort of your home-away-from-home for a delicious meal and a bit of relaxation before another big day begins.
Dedicate a Full Day for Each of Your Orlando Destinations
You’ll never see everything Orlando has to offer during a single trip. So, as you plan your vacation itinerary, pick a few top destinations and allot at least a day to visit each. If you’re having trouble choosing from so many different options, here are a few of our favorites:
Walt Disney World
No trip to Orlando would complete without a visit to the king of all theme parks: Walt Disney World!
This sprawling entertainment complex consists of four separate theme parks, two water parks, more than 30 hotels, multiple golf courses, and so much more.
Best of all, RV travelers can set up their homebase at The Campsites at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort. This RV-friendly site features areas for pop-up campers, larger style RVs, and everything in between. It doesn’t matter if you’re staying for one day or 10 days, there’s enough here to keep the whole family entertained.
Kennedy Space Center
Located just an hour outside of Orlando, the Kennedy Space Center has served as the primary launch site for NASA’s manned space missions since 1968. Not only can visitors view live rocket launches, they can also tour the center’s mission zones highlighting key moments in our country’s spaceflight history like the moon landing and the shuttle program.
The visitor center also offers a bus tour through some of the complex’s other points of interest, including the Apollo and Saturn V centers as well as the current SpaceX launch site. This attraction is sure to be a hit with the history buffs and junior scientists in your family.
Wall Street Plaza
If you’re vacationing without the kids in tow and would like to sample a bit of the city’s nightlife, head over to Wall Street Plaza in downtown Orlando. This party hub features seven different dining and nightclub venues along one city block. And if that isn’t enough, the plaza also hosts outdoor block parties every weekend and is home to the pre- and post-game celebrations for Orlando City Soccer home matches.
Discovery Cove
Discovery Cove offers visitors an all-inclusive opportunity to interact with wildlife in a tropical setting. This unique resort limits attendance to 1,300 visitors per day, so you won’t be battling the crowds like you would at other local attractions. Instead, you can relax in the resort’s pool, snorkel with tropical fish, wade alongside otters, hand-feed toucans and parrots, and even swim with dolphins.
Park admission also includes a complimentary breakfast, lunch, and unlimited snacks, as well as free alcoholic beverages for guests 21 and older. Since admission is limited, you’ll need to plan your visit in advance. However, it’s guaranteed to be one of your more memorable stops during your Orlando stay.
Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve
If you enjoy the outdoors, take a day trip to Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve. Located just 90 minutes east of downtown Orlando, this natural area features 110,000 acres of protected habitat, including Cypress Ponds which can only be found in central Florida.
While visiting the park, your family can hike and bike along dozens of different trails, canoe or paddle through the rivers and lakes scattered throughout the area, or spend a relaxing day birdwatching. You can even bring your dog along for some much-needed exercise.
